Transport Canada Increases Security Measures for Travelers to India

OTTAWA: In a significant move, Transport Canada has announced enhanced security screening measures for passengers travelling to India. Federal Transport Minister Anita Anand stated that the decision was made “out of an abundance of caution” and emphasized that these measures are temporary.

“Transport Canada has implemented temporary additional security screening measures,” Anand said in a statement released Monday evening. While the exact reasons for the heightened security were not disclosed, Anand acknowledged that passengers may experience delays due to the additional screenings.

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) will oversee the implementation of these measures. CATSA conducts passenger screening and baggage checks at airports, including procedures such as hand swabs, x-ray screening for carry-on luggage, and physical passenger inspections.

The announcement comes amid a backdrop of heightened tensions between Canada and India. While no specific incident was linked to the new measures, the announcement follows recent developments, including the diversion of an Air India flight from New Delhi to Chicago to Iqaluit last month due to a bomb scare, which was later deemed a false alarm.

This development also coincides with strained diplomatic relations between the two countries. Last month, the RCMP accused Indian government agents of being involved in activities such as murder, extortion, and intimidation in Canada, particularly targeting members of the pro-Khalistan movement. Canada subsequently expelled six Indian diplomats, prompting India to retaliate by ordering six Canadian diplomats to leave the country.

The enhanced security measures signal Canada’s cautious approach amid these tensions. Passengers traveling to India are advised to plan for potential delays and cooperate with CATSA to ensure smooth screening processes.

Dhwani will continue to monitor and report updates on this developing story.
