Indian Consular Event to Assist Hindus and Sikhs with Life Certificates Cancelled Amid Violent Threats, Sparking Anger in Canadian Hindu Community

Brampton, Canada – The Brampton Triveni Mandir and Community Centre has cancelled its consular event scheduled for November 17, 2024, following warnings from Peel Regional Police about an “extremely high and imminent threat of violent protests.” The event, organized by the Indian consulate to assist Indian-origin Hindus and Sikhs with renewing life certificates, was called off due to security concerns.

This cancellation has triggered widespread anger within the Hindu community of Canada, many of whom are frustrated with Peel Police’s response to the escalating threats against temples. The growing perception among Hindu Canadians is that law enforcement has failed to adequately address violent threats circulating on social media, including a video featuring Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, In the video, which went viral earlier this month, Pannun specifically targets Hindu temples, including Brampton’s Triveni Mandir, threatening violent protests.

“We are deeply saddened that Canadians now feel unsafe coming to Hindu temples in Canada,” temple officials said in a statement on Monday, while urging Peel Police to take stronger actions against the threats and ensure security for the community. Many Hindu leaders have voiced concerns that the police are not doing enough to protect them, further deepening the mistrust between law enforcement and the local Hindu population.

The frustration stems from not only the cancellation of this event but also a violent disruption that occurred on November 3, 2024, at the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton, during another consular camp. Demonstrators, some waving Khalistan flags, clashed with participants, leading to widespread condemnation. Footage of the violence has circulated widely, fueling anger within the Hindu community.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condemned the attacks, calling them “cowardly attempts” to intimidate Indian diplomats and calling on Canadian authorities to uphold the rule of law. The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) echoed these sentiments, stating that the recent actions by Peel Police compromised the safety and constitutional rights of Canadian Hindus.

The growing diplomatic strain between India and Canada, particularly after Canada’s accusations against India regarding the assassination of Khalistan advocate Hardeep Singh Nijjar, has added to the unrest. Local community leaders are now calling for stronger security measures and a more robust response from Canadian authorities to protect their temples and rights.

As tensions rise, the anger toward Peel Police continues to grow, with many calling for law enforcement to take more decisive steps to ensure the safety of Hindu places of worship across Canada.
