WRPS’ Direct Action Response Team Seizes Loaded Handgun in Kitchener

      Waterloo Region, Ontario – The Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) Direct Action Response Team (DART) has successfully seized a loaded handgun and drugs during a traffic stop investigation in Kitchener.

      On May 31, 2024, at approximately 12:50 p.m., DART officers, who were on proactive patrol, conducted a traffic stop in the area of Fischer-Hallman Road and Victoria Street South. During the stop, the driver was arrested for obstructing police after providing a false name.

      The subsequent investigation led to the discovery and seizure of a loaded handgun and several controlled substances, including suspected cocaine, oxycodone, cannabis, and hydromorphone. The seized property included the loaded handgun, suspected cocaine, oxycodone, cannabis, and hydromorphone.

      As a result of the investigation, a 24-year-old male from Kitchener has been charged with several offenses. These include unauthorized possession of a firearm, careless storage of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a prohibited device, unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of a firearm with ammunition, tampering with a serial number, possession for the purpose of trafficking (three counts), obstructing police, and possession of cannabis for the purpose of distributing.

      The accused was held in police custody pending a bail hearing.

This significant seizure highlights the ongoing efforts by WRPS to maintain public safety and prevent the distribution of illegal substances and firearms within the region.
